Battalion Deputy Commander of LIB 211, Lt. Col. Win Than, Killed by Sniper Fire After Relocation to Kyaukphyu; Heavy Losses Among New Military Recruits in Ongoing Clashes with AA

Lt. Col. Win Than, Deputy Battalion Commander of Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 211, who was newly transferred to Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State as part of a promotion and reassignment, was shot and killed by a sniper from the Arakan Army (AA) after delivering a message to his commanding officer, according to military sources cited by CDM Major Zin Yaw speaking to Yangon Khit Thit News.

Previously stationed at the Northern Regional Military Command in Myitkyina as a second-level operations officer (Military A2), Lt. Col. Win Than was transferred by air to the battalion base in Kyaukphyu on May 26.

“This officer came from the Northern Command in Myitkyina. He had served as a second-tier operations officer (A2) and was reassigned on the 26th. Right after arriving by military aircraft, he went straight to the battalion commander’s office to deliver his transfer report. On the way back, he was hit by sniper fire and died,” said CDM Major Zin Yaw to Yangon Khit Thit.

It is also reported that the wife of the deceased Lt. Col. Win Than is a notoriously brutal deputy police officer based in Myitkyina.

According to current military sources, the AA currently has the upper hand in the fighting in Kyaukphyu Township. The military council forces have sustained heavy casualties, particularly among new recruits. Many of the fallen soldiers reportedly belong to Training Batches 9 and 10, indicating severe losses among recently conscripted personnel.
